This is the first in a seven card series of vintage postcards from Berkeley, California.

The postmark on this view of the Sather Tower / Campanile on the University of California Campus in Berkley is June, 1950. The date is hard to read, the 5 could be a 6 but since the price of sending a postcard went from one cent to two cents in 1952, the date must be 1950.
The message, sent by my father, Julius Frieseke to his mother, Mable Frieseke has nothing to do with the photo. The card was sent from King’s Beach (Lake Tahoe) and the message is, “Got here OK about 1 P.M. No troubles. Went swimming & sat on beach lots of fun with rubber boat. Julius.
The postcard was published by the Union Oil Co (76) as one in a series of postcards of the West.

The first postcard in a new series.

This is a “real photographic postcard” and it is labled City Hall – But where? A real photo postcard is an actual photograph printed onto postcard stock. You can actually see the word, Velox printed in the stamp area. Velox is a type of Kodak photo paper.
The real question about this postcard is, Where is it? I don’t have a clue. The words, City Hall are on the front of the building with the tower. The card is labeled City Hall also. The sign on the left side is about mens suits but no store name is legible. There appears to be a bay or a lake in the background. Note the horse and wagon by City Hall.
Does anyone know (or think they know) the name of this town ? Use the comment section below to let me know.
This seven card series is about vintage postcards I have been unable to categorize. Help me if you can!

Postcard #5 in the Michigan series.

This beautifully printed postcard depicts the Detroit Museum of Art. It was probably printed in the early years of the 20th century as it does not have a split back for a message. The split back became legal in 1907. This unused postcard has the appearance of a hand colored, German made postcard. There is, however, no Made in Germany mark or any indication that it is hand colored.
I goggled the Detroit Museum of Art and found an image of a building of about the same vintage as this one but does not look like the building pictured here.
Ah ha! With my magnifing glass, I just found a copyright date of 1906, so I am correct in my guess at the date. The postcard was published by Detroit Publishing Co and it has a card number, 7162.

Postcard #4 in the Michigan series.

This postcard is dated May 9, 1941, addressed to Mrs Clara Chapell in Sacramento, California. I cannot identify Mrs. Chapell as a relative but the address on the card is my Grandparents home in Sacramento. Perhaps she was a visiting friend from Michigan.
The message on the postcard is: “May 9 – 41 Dear Friend. Was glad to hear from you, It is quite cool here today. I am trying to clean house Mrs Smith has been helping me, my arm is not alright yet. Mrs. Saks, Clara & family called on us Sunday. Norma looks pale, but is gaining. Mrs. Crins”.
The image on the card is titled, James Oliver Curwood Chateau, Owosso, Mich. According to Wikipedia, Curwood was an prolific author and outdoorsman. He wrote numerous adventure books, many were made into movies.
He fufilled a lifelong ambition and built, for his home in Owosso, this French (style) Chateau. The Chateau does not contain any eating or sleeping areas. He used the great room to entertain guests and the largest turret as his writing studio.
The publisher of this postcard is not named but there is an ‘M’ in a logo on the back. The card is marked Made in U.S.A. and the card number is 20383.

This is the third postcard in this Michigan series.

This beautifully printed postcard view of the Public Library in Detroit is marked Germany. There is a copyright date of 1904 which corresponds to the style of the back. Postal regulations at that time did not allow the correspondent to write a message on the address side of the card. So, if this card had been used, the message would have to written on the face of it.
The postcard was published by the Rotograph Co., the card number is D-3840.

This is the first in a series of seven vintage postcards from the State of Michigan.

The title on this 1910 postcard is City Hall, Alpena Mich and U.S. Fish Hatchery. I suppose the hatchery is the small building to the left side. I googled the town of Alpena and find it has about 12,000 people (2000) and is located on Lake Huron on Thunder Bay.
This postcard is addressed to my Great Aunt, Mame Robinson. It is signed by “Cousin Allie” I have now idea who Allie is or what the relationship is. The message on the postcard is: “Alpena Mich 8/15/10 Dear Mamie I will add on card to your number of postals. We are all well and hope you are all enjoying the Sause (?) blessings. We went down to mothers yesterday mother was 67 years old. She is not-a-bit well. She works to hard. with love Cousin Allie”.
This postcard was published by Adam’s Book Store and has a number 15. It is also marked, Made in Germany. There is an additional number, probably a photo number on the face of the card – 457686.

This is the final postcard in this series of vintage postcards from in and around Los Angeles.

This postcard, postmarked 1935 is between the same two correspondents as the card posted on October 13th. Written by my Grandmother, Mabel Frieseke to her sister, my Great Aunt, Mame Robinson. Just about the same message too – on two postcards written 35 years apart. ]
The message on this postcard is: “Los Angeles, Sept 20 Dear Mame- Arrived all right Stayed at this hotel overnight, Went out to Eve’s next A.M. Am going to the ranch Sunday A.M. We had a hot trip down. Love Mabel.”
I googled the Hotel Lankershim and found that the site, 700 Broadway, is now a multi-story parking lot with a Carl’s Junior at street level.
The postcard, most likely an advertising postcard for the hotel was published by E.C. Kropp and it has a card number, 8184.

Postcard #2 and final postcard in the Stanford series.

This unused postcard is a view of the ruins of the Gymnasium at Stanford University following the great San Francisco earthquake of April 18, 1906.
Postal regulations in 1906 required that the back side of postcards be used exclusively for the address. Any message was to be written on the front of the postcard.
The postcard was published by M. Reider. I enjoyed seeing the extravagant art nouveau logo on the back of the postcard.
POSTCARD-A-DAY will be off for a couple of days – back the middle of next week.

Postcard #1 in a two card series of images of Stanford University.

The postcard is titled, General View of Stanford University, California. The postmark is 1914. I, at first, thought that the number, 1895 was the date of the view. However after considering that the University was largely destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, I decided that 1895 must be the card number rather than the date.
This postcard is addressed to my Grandmother, Maude Englehart. The message on this sepia toned card is: “Dearest Mother The boys have arrived. Grandmother has been nearly crazy with anxiety. You darling to send us so much good things to eat. Will write later. Lovingly Tob”(?) + a note at top, “The boys had no trouble whatever” (illegible last word)
I am unable to determine who signed the card. It is addressed to ‘mother’ yet the signature is not the name of any of the children (my aunts & uncles). Names of wives don’t work either – so I’m puzzled.
The card was published by Cardinell-Vincent

This postcard view is of a classroom where my wife spent her formative years.

The three postcards in this series were provided by my wife, Chris. She attended this school from age 4 until her family emigrated from England to America when she was age 16. They left for America in 1954 and this postcard probably dates from that time.
This is a recent photo of her wearing her High School Blazer. The blazer was sold several years ago to a collector for display in a museum.

There is no indication of photographer or publisher of this postcard.
