A NEW SERIES – POSTCARDS FROM BERKELEY, CA

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

This is the first in a seven card series of vintage postcards from Berkeley, California.

200911015 CAMPANILE

The postmark on this view of the Sather Tower / Campanile on the University of California Campus in Berkley is June, 1950.  The date is hard to read, the 5 could be a 6 but since the price of sending a postcard went from one cent to two cents in 1952, the date must be 1950.

The message, sent by my father, Julius Frieseke to his mother, Mable Frieseke has nothing to do with the photo.  The card was sent from King’s Beach (Lake Tahoe) and the message is, “Got here OK about 1 P.M.  No troubles.  Went swimming & sat on beach lots of fun with rubber boat.  Julius.

The postcard was published by the Union Oil Co (76) as one in a series of postcards of the West.

THE LINDSAY GIRL – A VINTAGE POSTCARD

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Postcard #6 in a 7 card series.

20091107 LINDSAY

This series was to be 7 vintage postcards that did not fit into other categories.  As I inspect this card I see that it could have gone into my section of advertising postcards but I didn’t look closely enough.

The unused postcard has a 1909 copyright date.  It is an image titled, The Lindsay Girl and it is an advertisement for Lindsay gas lights and gas mantles.  The image fits my notion of a Victorian home lit by gas lights.

JACKSON LAKE – A VINTAGE POSTCARD

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Postcard #4 in the Wyoming series.

20091028 JACKSON LAKE

This postcard view of Jackson Lake and the Teton Range is unused and undated.  Published by the Union Pacific Railroad these postcards were distributed by the Railroad to spread the word of the wonders of the West. (In other words, an advertising postcard).

It is a “linen finish” postcard.   Linen finish postcards have a range of from 1930 through 1944.

There is a card number in the stamp area, 81896.

HOTEL LANKERSHIM, LOS ANGELES, CA

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

This is the final postcard in this series of vintage postcards from in and around Los Angeles.

20091017 Lankershim

This postcard, postmarked 1935 is between the same two correspondents as the card posted on October 13th.  Written by my Grandmother, Mabel Frieseke to her sister, my Great Aunt, Mame Robinson.  Just about the same message too – on two postcards written 35 years apart.  ]

The message on this postcard is:  “Los Angeles, Sept 20  Dear Mame-  Arrived all right Stayed at this hotel overnight, Went out to Eve’s next A.M. Am going to the ranch Sunday A.M.  We had a hot trip down.  Love Mabel.”

I googled the Hotel Lankershim and found that the site, 700 Broadway, is now a multi-story parking lot with a Carl’s Junior at street level.

The postcard, most likely an advertising postcard for the hotel was published by E.C. Kropp and it has a card number, 8184.

THIS IS TRUMAN! A VINTAGE POSTCARD

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

Card #7 in the quadruped series.

20090926 TRUMAN

This advertising postcard is not a vintage card as it was published only a couple of years ago.  The image is of Truman, mascot in a Santa Rosa photography store.  Truman’s photo is posted here because of  Evelyn Theriault’s Festival of Postcards.  (see the link in the BLOGROLL)  Evelyn’s topic for October is Quadrupeds – Truman has all four of his legs, so he qualifies to have his postcard posted here.  The photo on the card is signed, the image is by Maria Villano.

THE SUTTER CLUB – FOLSOM, CA – A VINTAGE POSTCARD

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

An advertising postcard for a bar / restaurant in Folsom, California.

20090902 SUTTER CLUB

This undated postcard was used by someone to collect an autograph.

The Sutter Club still exsists on Sutter Street in Folsom.  I have no information about who Daniel Kelley is (was ?) or who the card was given to.

The postcard is marked Horger Photography, Folsom and it has a number, 42884.

La vieille Varsovie in Dallas, Texas

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

Finally, another postcard from Postcard-A-Day!  This postcard from a Dallas restaurant the first one I’ve posted in quite a while.  Sorry for the break but with vacation plus an illness I’ve been away from my computer.  I was posting a series of advertising postcards when interrupted and will continue with the last three postcards in that series.

20090901 VARSOVIE

This advertising postcard appears to be a copy of a woodblock print or a faux woodblock.   It has a 1962 postmark (it could be 1967).  The card is addressed to my Grandmother. Mable Frieseke,  and was sent by her niece, Ruth Gaines.

The text of the postcard is:  ” Oct. 6  Dear Aunt Mable & all.  We are having a wonderful time.  There has been little traffic – we have the road to ourselves.  The weather is HOT!  The Grand Canyon was magnificent – just can’t be described. We are going to Little Rock, Arkansas tomorrow.  Our love to all, Ruth.

There is no publisher listed so it must be the restaurant itself.

ANOTHER ADVERTISING POSTCARD – ANSEL ADAMS YET

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

This is the fourth in this series of vintage advertising postcards.

20090812 MASSON

This unused advertising postcard from Paul Masson Cellars in Saratoga, California is not dated.  The fountain was designed by Gurdon Woods and is titled “Effervescence of Champagne“.

The building and fountain were built in 1959 and abandoned in the 80s so the postcard has to be within that time frame, probably closer to the opening of the building than later.  In researching this postcard I found a note indicating that this postcard view is an Ansel Adams photograph although his name does not appear on the postcard.  The postcard is marked, Photo Courtesy Aluminum Company of America and has the number PM204.

THE IDEAL FISH RESTAURANT – SANTA CRUZ, CA

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

This advertising postcard from Santa Cruz, California is #3 in this series.

20090811 SHELL

This 1936 postcard was mailed to my Great Aunt, Mame Robinson, and was from my second cousin, Ruth Robinson.  The linen finish postcard is advertising a fish restaurant in Santa Cruz.  It appears my cousin and her parents were vacationing there and in Pacific Grove.

The message on the postcard is: “Pacific Grove July 21, 1936 Dear Mame, We are having a good time.  Dad is getting a good rest, and Mom is getting a little sunburned. How is the bird behaving?  We’ll be staying here about another week.  Love Ruth”.

The image on the card represents another time when abalone were easily available to restaurants.

The postcard was published by E.C. Kropp and was distributed by the restaurant.  There is a card number, 8086N

THE EMPORIUM – SAN FRANCISCO – A VINTAGE POSTCARD

Monday, August 10th, 2009

This is the second in a series of vintage postcards intended as advertisements.

20090810 EMPORIUM

This postcard is postmarked 1908 and is a view of the interior of  The Emporium, a San Francisco department store.

The postcard is addressed to my Great Grandmother and is from Lou Vivian MacQuiddy.  Although she signed with just the initial, “V”  Vivian was the sister of my Great Grandfather and was identified (she only used her initials on her postcards) by a reader of this BLOG, Gretchen Larson, who is Vivian’s Great Granddaughter.

The message on the postcard reads: “Dear Mama  Had a good trip. Baby behaved beautifully and seemed well.  Cam and Tom both met us at 16th St.  We leave at 1.20 for S.F.  Don’t worry for I am feeling much stronger.  V”.

The postcard was published by Souvenir Post Card Co. and the text on the card is “10 – Section of Rotunda, The Emporium  California’s Largest, America’s Grandest Department Store, San Francisco, Cal.”.
