BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA – A JOAQUIN MILLER POEM

Postcard #5 in the unclassified series.

20091105 MILLER

This series of vintage postcards are ones that I was unable to categorize easily.  Now that I look carefully at this postcard, I see that it could have gone into the Berkeley, CA section of my collection box.

The photo on the postcard is an image of the poet, Joaquin Miller, a well know California poet.  Born in 1836 and died in 1913, Joaquin Miller was his pen name.  He was born, Cincinnatus Heine.   His poem on the reverse of this postcard touts Berkeley as a magnificent intellectual mecca and revels in the Westward expansion of the U.S.  This is a real booster item published by the Berkeley Chamber of Commerce.

THEO. ROOSEVELT QUOTED ON POSTCARD

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

This motovational postcard will fill out this week.

20090516-roosevelt

I wonder about the intent of this embossed postcard with it’s quotation from Theodore Roosevelt.  Was this part of the lead-up to World War I ?  Was it about some other current event or was it just a motivational effort ?  The picture of the tiger somehow makes me think more of Kipling than Roosevelt.  I have no idea what the design under the quote is about.

The undated postcard was written to my mother – its copyright date – 1910 and the fact it was printed in Germany probably places it between 1910 and 1915.  My mother would have been a young teenager in that time span.  The written message is difficult to read, it is written in pencil and smudged.  It says: “Dear Kid  Rec’d your letter today.  Are you glad to hear about H.S.  I hope we get a new one.  Say if you go to town Sat night and you drive around after I have no way of getting there.”  The rest is written sideways on the card and they look like, “You please come early Cula”.

As mentioned above, the card was printed in Germany and it is Embossed.  The publisher is not named but there is a logo, a G with an artist’s pallet.  The card is also marked Roosevelt Series Postcard No 102.  It is also marked Design Copyright 1910 by John Geyer.

HAPPY NEW YEAR #5

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

This beautiful postcard is Number 5 in the New Year Greeting series.

A beautiful 1907 postcard in the Art Nouveau style, the message is all business but the printed holiday message is clear.  The card is addressed to Laura Walker, one of our frequent correspondents on this BLOG.  We have Miss Walker’s address in a number of locations – She was still in Washington D.C. in January of 1907.

The message reads: “Don’t forget the Library Meeting Jan 4. 7:30 P.M Public Library.  Mr Mills wrote us to get your address  I sent it to him.  L.V. McCullough.”.

The publisher of the card is listed as Ernest Nister, London  and E.P. Dutton & Co. New Your.  The card is marked “Printed in Bavaria” and has the card number, 97.

TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS #3

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

This is the third post in the Christmas series.

Another postcard to Miss Laura Walker – Living in Oakland CA at this time.  This Christmas greeting has a postmark – hard to read but it looks like 1910.  There is another postcard on this BLOG written to Miss Walker, at an Oakland address, postmarked 1911 so 1910 is likely the date of the card in this post.

This is a beautiful postcard – embossed and with gold.  The art on this card was created by FRA ANGELICO, a  Dominican friar and Florentine painted who lived in the 1400s.  He was also known as Guido di Pietro.  This card is marked “Printed in Germany” -there is no indication of publisher or card number.

The message on the card reads: “You did not like the man we sent you so we’re sending you an angel – May he bring you all Holiday blessings and insure you a happy and prosperous New Year.  Mr & Mrs. F.W. Tolles” (might by Tollis).

AGUA CALIENTE HOTEL – Tijuana, Mexico

Friday, October 24th, 2008

This vintage postcard is number 6 in the series of postcards from Mexico

This 1929 postcard is be a reproduction of a painting of the Agua Caliente Hotel, just across the California border in Tijuana, Mexico.  The painting is signed by J. Paul Burnham.  The Agua Caliente Hotel and Racetrack were built in 1928 and attracted many Californians and Hollywood celebrities to cross the border for horse racing, gambling and other activities.

The original structure (at least the racetrack grandstand) burned in 1971.

ANTIQUE POSTCARD – MEXICO – DIEGO RIVERA

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

This is postcard #4 in the series of vintage post cards from Mexico.

This image on this signed and unused postcard is a reproduction of a Diego Rivera fresco / mural at the Palace Nacional de Mexico.  (A postcard is considered signed if the artist’s name appears is printed on the card.)  The title of the mural is La Conquista / The Conquest.

I made a Google search to see if I could date the mural to estimate a date for the postcard but could not find this exact work of art so the postcard remains undated.

The postcard is published by the Fischgrund Co.  It does not have a card number.
